Founder and leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kyerematen, has renewed his call for an alternative political force in Ghana, saying he remains determined to challenge the long-standing dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Kyerematen made the comments during an interview, where he reflected on Ghana’s political development since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1992.
He said the continued presence of the NPP and NDC at the centre of national politics has not, in his view, produced the level of development Ghana needs.
Mr Kyerematen pointed to challenges including roads, electricity, healthcare and other development projects as areas where he believes more progress should have been made after more than three decades of alternating governments.
“I am still determined to break the NPP and NDC duopoly,” he said, adding that he believed God would give him the strength and determination to pursue his political mission.
He also compared Ghana’s development with that of China, arguing that countries can achieve major transformation when development policies are sustained over time.
The former Trade and Industry Minister has positioned the UP as an alternative to the two established parties. He previously left the NPP in 2023 and contested the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate under the Movement for Change. The movement was later reorganised into the United Party.
Mr Kyerematen said his political agenda is centred on what he describes as Ghana’s national interest rather than partisan considerations.
He has therefore appealed to Ghanaians who share his vision to support the UP as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Mr Kyerematen said the 2028 elections would provide another opportunity for voters to consider political alternatives beyond the NPP and NDC.
