Accra to get 3 new landfill sites – Kpone Katamanso MCE

The government is preparing to establish three new regional landfill sites across the Greater Accra Region as part of a long-term strategy to improve waste management and replace landfill facilities that have reached full capacity.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kpone Katamanso, Samuel T.K. Morton, said the project forms part of a 50-year waste management plan being championed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim.

According to Mr. Morton, a technical committee working on the project is finalising the engineering designs, which will be submitted to Cabinet for approval before construction begins.

He disclosed that land has already been secured at Ayikuma, Sege and Paanor, where the new landfill facilities will be built to serve different parts of the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking to the media, the MCE explained that the region will be divided into three waste management zones, with each landfill site designated to receive waste from specific districts and municipalities.

The arrangement, he said, is expected to improve waste collection and disposal while reducing pressure on existing facilities.

Mr. Morton added that once the Ayikuma landfill becomes operational, tricycle operators who currently dispose of refuse at the Kpone landfill site will be redirected to the new facility.

He noted that the Kpone landfill has exceeded its operational lifespan and will eventually be decommissioned.

According to him, the site will be converted into a waste-to-energy facility capable of generating different forms of energy from solid waste.

The MCE also expressed concern over the increasing cases of indiscriminate waste dumping by some tricycle operators, describing the practice as a major challenge that continues to place an additional financial burden on the Assembly.

To address the problem, he said surveillance teams have been deployed to monitor illegal dumping across the municipality.

He warned that operators caught disposing of waste at unauthorised locations would face prosecution under the law.

Mr. Morton urged waste collectors and residents to comply with the Assembly’s sanitation regulations, stressing that proper waste management remains essential to protecting public health and creating a cleaner environment.
