Doctors at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have stopped all Out-Patient Department (OPD) services because of an ongoing disagreement between Laboratory Physicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists at the hospital’s Central Laboratory.
The Korle Bu Doctors Association (KODA) announced that this action started on Monday, May 4, 2026. They say the problem has been going on for a long time and is now affecting patient care and medical decisions.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 3, KODA said the situation could get worse if it is not solved quickly. They explained that they are stopping all OPD services for now, and if nothing changes, they may also stop in-patient services later.
KODA says the issue started because some members of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists are not allowing certain doctors to access the Central Laboratory.
They believe this is unfair and is affecting how work is done at the hospital.
The doctors are asking for all specialised lab results to be checked and approved by qualified Laboratory Physicians before they are given out.
They also want full access to lab equipment and systems for both medical work and training.
In addition, KODA is asking hospital management to look into reports that some of its members have been threatened. They want action taken to protect staff and keep the hospital running properly.
The Association also disagrees with a plan to introduce 24-hour specialist outpatient services. They say the hospital already offers 24-hour outpatient care through the Korle-Bu Polyclinic, so the new plan is not needed.
KODA admitted that this decision will cause inconvenience to patients, but they believe it is important. They say the goal is to protect patients and maintain high standards at the hospital in the long run.
