A total of 49 individuals have been arrested following an attack on a task force of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during an anti-illegal mining operation in the Western Region.

The incident occurred during a targeted operation by the task force aimed at clamping down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in parts of the region.

The team reportedly came under attack from suspected illegal miners and their associates but managed to repel the assault and secure the area.

The confrontation escalated when the task force attempted to enforce mining regulations, leading to resistance from individuals believed to be engaged in illegal mining activities.

Despite the attack, members of the task force survived the incident without reported fatalities.

Following the clash, security personnel launched a sweeping operation in the area, leading to the arrest of 49 suspects.

The individuals are currently in custody and are expected to assist with investigations into the attack and their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat is a specialised unit established under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to coordinate intelligence-led operations against illegal mining across the country.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and additional arrests may be made as security agencies work to dismantle networks involved in illegal mining activities in the region.

The government has reiterated its commitment to sustaining the fight against galamsey, stressing that attacks on state personnel will not deter efforts to enforce the law and protect the country’s natural resources.
