Thirty-seven inmates at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison have taken the Teacher Licensure Examination as part of efforts by the Ghana Prisons Service to help them rebuild their lives through education.
The inmates, who have completed their degree programmes, wrote the examination at the prison facility on Monday, September 14, 2026.
According to the Ghana Prisons Service in a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 15, the examination was conducted under strict supervision.
Two external invigilators were present, with officers from the Ghana Prisons Service also assisting with the process.
The Service said the initiative forms part of its commitment to using education as a key tool for the reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.
It explained that giving inmates the opportunity to continue their education and gain professional qualifications could help them find meaningful work and build better lives after they are released.
For the 37 inmates, taking the Teacher Licensure Examination is another important step in their rehabilitation.
If they meet the requirements, the qualification could allow them to pursue careers in teaching and other productive fields.
The Ghana Prisons Service said the initiative is part of its wider efforts to give inmates the knowledge and skills they need to successfully return to society and make positive contributions after serving their sentences.
