The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has arrested Chinese managers of Jin Yuan Jia Limited at Afienya near Tema, in the Greater Accra Region, after the company allegedly defied a state closure order and resumed the production of substandard mattresses.
The arrest was carried out on Monday, May 18, 2026, following reports that the company had reopened its factory despite being shut down by authorities in October 2025 for violating regulatory and quality standards.
According to the GSA, the company had earlier been ordered to stop operations after investigations revealed that it was producing mattresses that failed to meet approved safety and quality requirements.
The Authority said the factory was officially locked and directed to remain closed until all concerns were addressed.
However, officials discovered that the company had resumed operations without approval, leading to a fresh enforcement exercise and the arrest of its managers.
Speaking on the development, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kwolaga Kubati, warned that the production of cheap and low-quality mattresses was negatively affecting consumers and disrupting fair competition in the industry.
“These people are manufacturing these products, selling them cheap, which is affecting fair trade,” he said.
Mr Kubati explained that established mattress manufacturing companies that comply with standards are struggling to compete because some producers use inferior and cheaper materials to reduce prices.
“Other companies that we are aware of, major companies, cannot compete again because the material that they are using is substandard and cheap,” he stated.
He added that many unsuspecting consumers purchase such products because of their lower prices, only to suffer health problems later.
“So, they will price their products cheap, then you and I, my sister, your mother in the village, will go and buy them. When you sleep on them and wake up, you have back aches. These are the causes of it,” he added.
The GSA says it will continue to enforce standards and regulations to protect consumers from unsafe products and ensure that manufacturers operate within approved quality requirements.
