Education Ministry suspends SHS graduation ceremonies

The Ministry of Education has announced the immediate suspension of all Senior High School (SHS) graduation ceremonies throughout Ghana due to rising concerns regarding what it characterises as excessive displays of wealth and flamboyance during these events.

In a press release dated June 20, 2026, the Ministry acknowledged the increasing public criticism surrounding the trend of extravagant celebrations that have become prevalent at graduation ceremonies in certain secondary schools.

The Ministry stated that educational institutions are fundamentally designed to foster learning, discipline, character development, and the cultivation of responsible citizens.

Consequently, graduation ceremonies should prioritise the celebration of academic accomplishments and personal growth rather than serve as venues for ostentatious displays.

“The Ministry wishes to emphasise that schools are institutions for learning, character development, discipline, and the nurturing of responsible citizens. Graduation ceremonies are intended to celebrate academic achievement and personal growth and should therefore reflect the values of modesty, dignity, and respect associated with the educational environment.”

The Ministry also denounced any behavior by students, parents, guardians, or other stakeholders that encourages extravagance and diverts attention from the genuine purpose of school graduation ceremonies.

“The Ministry strongly condemns any conduct by students, parents, guardians, or other stakeholders that promotes extravagance and detracts from the true purpose of school ceremonies.”

The Ministry clarified that this review aims to ensure that graduation ceremonies are in harmony with the core values of Ghana’s education system and maintain standards of discipline and responsibility.
