Aston Villa are reportedly considering a move for former Spain and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos as manager Unai Emery looks to strengthen his defence.
According to reports, Emery has personally tried to convince Ramos to join Aston Villa as the club deals with a number of defensive injuries.
Ramos is currently a free agent and could therefore join the Premier League side without a transfer fee if an agreement is reached.
The 39-year-old remains one of the most experienced defenders in world football. He spent most of his career at the highest level, winning major domestic and European trophies with Real Madrid before later playing for Paris Saint-Germain and Mexican side Monterrey.
His experience could be valuable to Villa, particularly as the club faces concerns over defensive depth.
Emery is believed to be keen on adding an experienced player to his squad as Aston Villa manage their injury problems. Ramos’ leadership and knowledge of European football could also provide an additional option for the manager.
The Spanish defender has a long relationship with Emery through their shared time in Spanish football, although they have not worked together at club level.
A move to Aston Villa would also give Ramos an opportunity to return to European football after his spell with Monterrey.
However, no agreement has been confirmed between the player and the club, and talks would still need to take place before any potential transfer can be completed.
