Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kwadaso Constituency of the Ashanti Region have demonstrated against the Municipal Chief Executive, Eric Asibey, calling for the revocation of his appointment.
The protesters accused the MCE of failing to work effectively with the party’s grassroots and raised concerns about the distribution of birds under the government’s “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” initiative.
The demonstration adds to growing tensions between the MCE and some members of the NDC in the constituency.
Earlier, a group describing itself as the NDC Grassroots Movement petitioned the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, over concerns about Asibey’s relationship with party members and constituency executives.
The group alleged that several efforts to get the MCE to use opportunities at the Municipal Assembly to support party members had not been successful.
It also called for intervention to help resolve the disagreements in the constituency.
Asibey, however, has rejected the allegations. He said the concerns were being raised by individuals who had opposed his nomination as MCE and maintained that he had been engaging with the grassroots.
The MCE also said he had spent more than GH¢100,000 on various activities and support for NDC members at the grassroots since assuming office.
He cited contributions to ward activities, support for nomination forms and other assistance to individuals.
