The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced the commencement of controlled spillage from the Bagre Dam following a significant rise in the reservoir’s water level.
As of Thursday, August 27, 2026, the dam’s water level stood at 234.64 metres, representing a 95.19% filling rate and leaving the reservoir just 0.36 metres below its normal operating level of 235 metres.
The WRC said the rise in the water level has made the controlled release necessary after an earlier planned spillage was suspended when the reservoir level dropped.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 27, the Commission cautioned residents living along the White Volta River and surrounding areas to take immediate measures to protect their lives and property.
Residents in potentially affected communities have also been urged to comply with safety instructions and directives from local assemblies and other relevant authorities to reduce the risks associated with the increased flow of water.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued an urgent directive for residents living along the banks of the White Volta River and other vulnerable waterways to evacuate.
NADMO warned that the increased water flow could affect communities along riverbanks and other flood-prone areas, urging residents to relocate to safer locations without delay.
The organisation also advised the public to remain vigilant, monitor official updates and comply with directives from NADMO and other responsible agencies.
Authorities are therefore urging residents in vulnerable areas to take the necessary precautions as the controlled spillage gets underway.
