Three teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG), have suspended their industrial strike following engagements with the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The suspension is expected to pave the way for further negotiations to address the outstanding concerns that prompted the industrial action.
Speaking after a meeting with the FWSC, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said the decision followed engagements with the Ministry of Employment and the Council of State over issues affecting teachers.
“We want to announce that we have suspended the strike today. We want to call all our members to return to the classrooms,” he said.
The unions embarked on the strike to demand the resolution of several outstanding issues, including delays in promotions, concerns over conditions of service and the payment of deprived-area allowances.
Delays in the payment of promotion-related arrears were among the major grievances raised by GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG.
On October 9, the Council of State invited representatives of the three unions to a meeting to deliberate on their concerns and explore possible solutions to the dispute.
The suspension of the strike is expected to create an opportunity for further discussions between the unions and the relevant authorities to resolve the outstanding issues.
