The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied reports that Alhaji Abdul-Latif Copshe, a prime suspect in the 2024 election-related violence in the Tolon Constituency, has been elected as the party’s constituency youth organiser.
Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, said the party’s current youth organiser for Tolon is Ibrahim Abdel Wahab and not Mr Copshe, who is reportedly wanted by security agencies in connection with the incident.
The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, had stated on Monday, August 24, that Mr Copshe, a prime suspect in the 2024 violence at Nyankpala in the Tolon Constituency, was declared the winner of the NPP constituency youth organiser election despite reportedly fleeing the community after the incident.
The violence reportedly resulted in one death and injuries to several people.
However, speaking in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Mr Mohammed rejected the claim, insisting that Mr Copshe was not elected as the party’s youth organiser.
“First and foremost, the minister did not speak the truth yesterday,” he said, maintaining that the person elected as the NPP youth organiser in Tolon is Ibrahim Abdel Wahab.
“We have not elected such a person as a youth organiser in Tolon. Our youth organiser is Ibrahim Abdel Wahab,” Mr Mohammed stated.
He acknowledged knowing Mr Abdul-Latif but explained that he had previously served as the party’s youth organiser and was no longer in that position.
“He previously held that position. He is not holding that position now. When did that tenure expire? It expired at the time we were conducting the constituency election in July,” he said.
Mr Mohammed also confirmed that Mr Abdul-Latif had been absent from the area and was being sought by security agencies. However, he stressed that apprehending him was the responsibility of the security agencies.
“That is the work of the security agencies to continue to look for him,” he said.
The interview, however, raised a distinction between the positions of constituency youth organiser and constituency organiser.
Host of Eyewitness News, Umaru Sanda, suggested that although Mr Abdul-Latif may not have been elected youth organiser, he could have been elected constituency organiser despite being on the wanted list.
Mr Mohammed said he would have to verify the claim from the party’s official records before commenting.
He explained that he had personally checked the records concerning the youth organiser position, which listed Ibrahim Abdel Wahab, but could not immediately confirm the name of the constituency organiser because he was dealing with records covering all 276 constituencies.
“I can verify that, unless I verify it from the official report, because I don’t need to speak to people just because somebody sent in that information. I need to verify before I speak to you,” he said.
