The Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU) has postponed its planned nationwide demonstration against private sector participation (PSP) in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In a memo to the Divisional Heads of the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU), PUWU had directed members to “embark on a nationwide demonstration against PSP”.
“We wish to inform you that the joint unions (SSU/JSU) will embark on a peaceful public demonstration across all operational regions to present a petition to the president of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama. This petition will be delivered to the regional ministers at all our operational regions,” the memo said.
However, checks at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Headquarters, which was designated as the assembly point for workers in the Greater Accra Region, showed that no workers had gathered for the protest.
Sources close to the TUC confirmed that the planned demonstration had been postponed.
The postponement follows a meeting between PUWU and the Ministry of Energy that began on Monday, September 28.
The meeting is expected to continue today, Tuesday, September 29, with discussions focusing on the concerns surrounding private sector participation in ECG.
The outcome of the engagement will determine whether PUWU proceeds with the planned demonstration or calls it off entirely.
