The Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Abdulai Zakaria, has been hospitalised with a suspected skull fracture after students allegedly attacked him during unrest at the school.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, prompting police intervention to rescue the headmaster and restore order on the school’s campus. The circumstances that triggered the violence remain unclear, while investigations are underway.
Some students were reportedly arrested in connection with the disturbances.
Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustilove Appiah Kannin, disclosed that the headmaster was initially admitted to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital before being referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for specialist treatment.
“He has a fracture in the head. And that is why he has been rushed to Komfo Anokye,” she said.
The MCE noted that the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) was awaiting a comprehensive police briefing before establishing what led to the attack.
She added that calm has since been restored on the school campus, with police officers maintaining a security presence to prevent further disturbances.
“At the moment, everything is calm. We are having a meeting this morning before we go to the school to see how the situation is,” Appiah Kannin said.
According to the MCE, municipal authorities are assessing the security situation and may temporarily close the school while investigations continue.
“We may take a decision maybe to let them go home for now while the investigation is going on,” she said.
She stressed that authorities are still piecing together the events that led to the violence and are unable to confirm the exact cause of the unrest at this stage.
Police investigations are ongoing, and officials are expected to announce further measures after completing their assessment of the situation at the school.
