GAF begins GH¢190m Burma Camp redevelopment project

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun redeveloping Burma Camp with a major housing project that will provide about 2,000 modern housing units for military personnel.

The project aims to address the long-standing accommodation shortage within the Armed Forces.

The first phase will deliver 250 housing units within 13 months at an estimated cost of GH¢190 million.

The redevelopment is part of the Barracks Rehabilitation Programme, which seeks to replace old military housing with modern residential facilities to improve the living conditions of service personnel and their families.

The new Burma Camp will include multi-storey apartment buildings, improved roads, upgraded water and electricity systems, better drainage, recreational facilities and other essential amenities.

The first phase covers a 13.5-acre site and will increase accommodation capacity from 36 households to 258 households through the construction of 18 residential blocks.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, Deputy Minister for Defence Ernest Brogya Genfi described the project as an important step towards addressing the poor condition of many military barracks, some of which date back to the colonial era.

He said years of use have left many of the buildings unsafe and unsuitable for modern living.

“A significant number of these structures have become weak, outdated and unable to meet acceptable modern housing standards,” he said.

He added that the Burma Camp Redevelopment Project marks a shift from repairing old barracks to building modern housing that can meet the future needs of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, described the project as a strategic investment in the men and women who serve the country.

He said the long-term goal is to transform Burma Camp into a modern residential community that offers safe and dignified housing for military personnel and their families while creating an environment that supports productivity and operational efficiency.

Lieutenant General Agyapong also assured stakeholders that the project would be implemented with transparency and accountability. According to him, strong financial controls, independent audits and strict monitoring systems will ensure value for money and the timely completion of the housing units.

When completed, the redevelopment project is expected to significantly reduce the housing deficit within the Ghana Armed Forces and improve the quality of life for soldiers and their families.
