Adaklu Mountain declared security zone after mudslide

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu has declared the Adaklu Mountain a security zone following a deadly mudslide threat that affected the area.

He made the announcement on Thursday when he led a delegation to Adaklu Helekpe to assess the damage caused by the disaster.

The team also visited the community to comfort residents affected by the incident.

The delegation included Roads and Highways Minister and Adaklu MP Governs Kwame Agbodza, Adaklu District Chief Executive Jerry Yao Ameko, and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The mudslide struck after more than five hours of heavy rainfall. It destroyed vehicles, farming equipment, buildings, and several personal belongings.

Authorities say the incident caused severe destruction along the mountain slope, leaving a deep channel where water continues to flow from the top to the base.

Mr. Gunu stressed that public safety cannot be guaranteed in the area for now.

“We cannot guarantee the safety of anybody going there, so the mountain has been declared a security zone,” he stated.

He instructed NADMO officials to cordon off the area to prevent people from accessing the mountain.

He also urged residents to stay away while investigations continue.

“I will ask the Geological Survey Department and NADMO officials to conduct feasibility studies to ascertain the cause of the mudslide,” he added.

Mr. Agbodza noted that while natural disasters occur, human activities such as the destruction of vegetation on slopes can increase the risk of such events.

A missionary, Reverend Jacob Reddekopp, who was heavily affected by the incident, said he was thankful that no lives were lost despite the destruction.

However, a woman and her three-year-old child sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Ho Teaching Hospital.
