The Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has seized 11 excavators, eight tricycles, and 32 motorbikes from illegal mining sites as part of ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal mining activities in the region.
The Bono Regional Minister and Chairman of REGSEC, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, said the seizures reflect the Council’s commitment to combating illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and protecting communities affected by the menace.
Speaking during an engagement with media practitioners in Sunyani, Mr Akwaboa dismissed claims that the Council had slowed its operations against illegal miners, insisting that the fight against galamsey remains a priority.
He said the confiscation of the mining equipment demonstrates REGSEC’s continued vigilance and proactive efforts to prevent illegal mining activities from spreading across the region.
“The seizure of these equipment shows that we are still committed to the fight against galamsey. We have not slowed down our operations,” he said.
The Regional Minister, however, stressed that the fight against illegal mining cannot be left to government agencies and the security services alone.
According to him, the cooperation and support of residents in mining communities are essential to securing lasting success in addressing the environmental and social effects of galamsey.
He noted that although REGSEC has intensified its operations in affected areas, sustainable progress will depend on the collective efforts of community members, traditional authorities and other stakeholders.
Mr Akwaboa reiterated that the Council will continue to pursue measures aimed at curbing illegal mining activities and ensuring that mining is carried out within the framework of the law.
