Three persons have lost their lives while 17 others have been rescued following a tragic road accident at Woadze near Kpeve on the Kpeve–Asikuma road in the Volta Region.
The incident took place on Friday, May 22, 2026, involving a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle with registration number GR 8231 C, which was en route from Abotuase to Ningo in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), personnel from the Peki Fire Station responded promptly after receiving a distress call at approximately 9:58 a.m.
In a statement released by the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of the service, the fire officers indicated that the vehicle was transporting 20 passengers, comprising 11 males, five females, and four children.
The vehicle reportedly suffered extensive damage in the collision, leaving several passengers trapped within the wreckage.
Firefighters successfully rescued 17 victims from the mangled vehicle.
“The rescue team successfully extricated 13 adults and four children from the wreckage,” the statement said.
However, three adults, two men and one woman, tragically lost their lives in the incident.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Kpando Divisional Command, along with officers from the Ghana Ambulance Service stationed at Afadjato and Juapong, assisted at the scene.
The injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were transported to the Kpando Government Hospital and Peki Government Hospital for treatment, preservation, and further investigations.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has reiterated its appeal to motorists to strictly adhere to road safety regulations and refrain from excessive speeding to help mitigate road accidents throughout the country.
