Dr. Bawumia fires up Minority ahead of Parliament sitting

Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Minority caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament to prepare seriously for a possible return to power in the 2029 general elections.

Speaking to NPP Minority MPs during a meeting ahead of the reopening of Parliament’s Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament, Bawumia said the party had moved beyond the stage of reflecting on its 2024 election defeat.

“We have finished the period of introspection. We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from 7th January 2029,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia told the MPs that the Minority should no longer see itself as a defeated group, but as a strong and disciplined team capable of winning back the trust of Ghanaians.

He explained that everything the caucus does in Parliament, every public comment they make, and every engagement with constituents should show that the NPP is ready to govern again.

Bawumia also reminded the MPs of major social intervention programmes introduced under previous NPP governments.

These include the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Free Senior High School policy, the School Feeding Programme, and the Youth Employment Programme.

He encouraged the caucus to confidently defend and promote the party’s achievements.

“We must always project this posture, that we are a party preparing to govern. This will send a strong and well-meaning message to the people of Ghana and emphasise our belief that it is only the NPP that can move this nation on a glorious path,” he said.

Bawumia further assured the Minority caucus of his personal support in helping them achieve their goals in Parliament.

He revealed that the NPP is also strengthening its internal structures through sector committees to improve coordination and ensure the party speaks with one voice.

“I will be directly involved in supporting you to achieve this. The entire party is also building a strong architecture to support you through the sector committees, so that we sing from the same hymn sheet and act with a coordinated strategy at every point in time,” he added.

The meeting is seen as one of  Bawumia’s most important engagements with the NPP’s parliamentary group since becoming the party’s presidential candidate. Political observers believe it could shape the Minority’s strategy in Parliament in the coming months.
