A five-year-old girl has died after falling into an uncovered manhole filled with water at Ansaful, near the Christ Apostolic Church in Winneba in the Central Region.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2026, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The GNFS disclosed the incident in a Facebook post on Sunday, September 6, explaining that the child’s father, Francis Zewu, reported the case to the Winneba Fire Station at about 7:57 p.m.
Following the report, the Winneba Municipal Fire Command quickly mobilised a rescue team to the scene.
A four-member team, led by STNO I Anthony McCarthy, left the station at approximately 8:16 p.m. and arrived at the location around 8:32 p.m.
Upon arrival, the firefighters found relatives of the deceased and members of the church gathered around the manhole.
The structure was reportedly about 12 feet deep, uncovered and filled with water.
The rescue team immediately commenced efforts to retrieve the child from the manhole.
Firefighters used a water pump to remove water and create better conditions for the recovery operation.
After about 34 minutes of work, the team successfully retrieved the body of the young girl.
Unfortunately, the child was found lifeless and could not be revived.
The body was subsequently handed over to the Police at the scene for the necessary procedures and further investigation.
