The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is expected to appear before a court in the Netherlands within the next 48 hours after his arrest at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

The MP was arrested on Sunday, May 8, 2026, over allegations of money laundering and involvement in romance scam-related crimes.

Sources close to his legal team say he is expected to challenge the legality of both his arrest and detention when he appears in court.

Parliament first confirmed the arrest in a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

The statement said Parliament had officially been informed about the situation and was working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather more details.

According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament and parliamentary leadership are in regular contact with the mission to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent MP for Asante Akyem North.

Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has assured the public that the MP is safe, stable, and has not been harmed while in detention.
