A four-month-old baby is still missing nearly two months after the devastating floods that hit communities across seven regions on June 29.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed revealed this on Monday, August 24, during the Government Accountability Series. He said the baby is the only person still officially reported missing after the disaster.
The floods affected 91,989 people from 18,398 households across 77 districts and claimed 39 lives.
“A total of 91,989 persons from 18,398 households were victims of the disaster. One person remained missing, a four-month-old baby, and 39 deaths,” he said.
The Greater Accra Region was the hardest hit. A total of 56,022 people were affected across 27 districts, while 17 people lost their lives.
The Central Region was the second most affected, with 21,882 people impacted across 16 districts and eight deaths recorded.
In the Volta Region, 9,466 people from seven districts were affected, with four deaths reported.
The Ashanti Region recorded 1,461 affected people across 16 districts. The Western North Region also recorded 937 affected people across six districts, but no deaths were reported.
About 2,000 people were affected in two districts in the Western Region.
The Eastern Region was also affected, with one district reporting flood damage, although the minister did not give a specific figure for the number of people affected.
The figures show just how serious the June 29 floods were. Many families were displaced, communities were disrupted, and dozens of people lost their lives.
However, for one family, the disaster is still far from over. Their four-month-old baby remains missing, leaving the family without answers nearly two months after the floods.
The Interior Minister did not give further details about how the baby went missing or provide an update on the latest efforts to find the child.
