Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has criticised the government over arrest of citizens and opposition activists for comments made online and in public discussions.
In a statement, Dr. Zaato questioned what he called a pattern of selective arrests targeting members and supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“When they arrested Abronye, you justified it. Then they arrested Sir Obama Pokuasi, you kept mute,” he stated.
He further referred to the cases involving social media personalities known as “Fante Kenkey” and “Baba Amando,” arguing that many people remained silent because they believed the individuals deserved the arrests.
Dr. Zaato also criticised the reported arrest of a citizen for allegedly posting online that “dumsor is back,” warning that the situation raises concerns about freedom of expression and democratic rights in Ghana.
“This isn’t the reset we voted for. And this wasn’t the side of the President we saw in opposition,” he added.
The comments come amid the arrest and interrogation of some NPP communicators and activists by state security agencies in recent months.
One of the most prominent cases involved Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP.
He was reportedly arrested and questioned over allegations including offensive conduct, false publication and comments considered likely to disturb public peace.
Another activist, popularly known as Baba Amando, was also reportedly picked up over social media posts alleged to have mocked President John Dramani Mahama and other government officials over the president’s failure to assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
The arrest of Sir Obama Pokuasi, Abronye, Baba Amando and other pro-NPP social media commentators has further intensified discussions about free speech and political tolerance under the current administration.
