South Africa goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams calls for African unity at World Cup

South African goalkeeper and captain, Ronwen Williams, has called for stronger unity among African nations at the FIFA World Cup, expressing disappointment over what he described as a lack of support for South Africa from fellow Africans during their match against Mexico.

Williams shared his feelings in an emotional message, saying Africans have traditionally rallied behind countries from the continent whenever they qualify for the World Cup.

However, he believes South Africa did not enjoy the same level of backing during their match.

According to the goalkeeper, many African football fans appeared to support Mexico instead of South Africa, a situation he said left members of the team saddened.

“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament but I can’t figure out why our own case is different. Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans,” Williams said.

The experienced shot-stopper admitted that the reaction was painful for the players, especially considering the importance of African solidarity on the world stage.

“We almost shed tears but truly this is sad. As Africans let’s stand for each other, let’s stand together,” he added.

Over the years, African supporters have often adopted teams from the continent once their own nations have been eliminated from competitions.

This sense of unity has been seen as one of the strengths of African football, with fans celebrating the success of fellow African countries as a victory for the continent as a whole.

The South African captain believes that spirit should remain strong regardless of rivalries or national differences.

He stressed that African teams face enough challenges when competing against football powerhouses from Europe and South America and therefore deserve support from fellow Africans.
