Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has been named the Most Valuable Player after delivering an impressive performance in Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
The winger played a key role as Ghana secured all three points in their Group L clash at BMO Field, helping the Black Stars make a positive start to their World Cup campaign.
Semenyo was one of Ghana’s most influential players throughout the match, constantly troubling the Panama defence with his pace, energy and attacking runs. Operating mainly on the right wing, he created several dangerous moments and was a major outlet for the Black Stars whenever they moved forward.

His contribution proved crucial in the build-up to the winning goal deep into stoppage time. As Ghana launched a final attack in the 95th minute, Semenyo’s movement and pressure stretched the Panama defence, creating space for substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante to find Caleb Yirenkyi, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Luis Mejía to seal the victory.
Beyond his attacking contributions, Semenyo also worked hard defensively. The forward regularly tracked back to support right-back Marvin Senaya, helping Ghana remain solid at the back. His work rate and determination were evident throughout the match as he carried the ball forward with purpose and remained a constant threat until the final whistle.
Speaking after receiving the Most Valuable Player award, Semenyo expressed his delight at helping Ghana secure a winning start to the tournament.
“I’m just happy we got the three points. It’s a dream to play at the World Cup and to help the team win the first game means everything,” he said.
The award shows Semenyo’s growing importance to the national team as Ghana aims to progress from a challenging Group L that also includes England and Croatia.
Wednesday’s performance further demonstrated the forward’s development since making his Black Stars debut in 2022. Now appearing in his second FIFA World Cup, Semenyo showed maturity, leadership and quality as he inspired Ghana to an important victory.
The Black Stars will now shift their focus to their next group match against England in Boston on June 23, with confidence boosted by their opening-day success.
