Ancelotti chooses Neymar over João Pedro for Brazil squad

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti reportedly prepared two different squad lists before confirming Neymar in his final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports from UOL Esporte, Ancelotti and Brazil’s football department remained uncertain about Neymar’s condition until the final hours before the official announcement.

One list included Neymar, while the other had João Pedro, who was considered a possible replacement.

The uncertainty started after Neymar reportedly felt discomfort in his calf during Santos’ recent match against Coritiba.

Medical staff quickly carried out further examinations, creating tension within the Brazilian camp ahead of the squad announcement.

Despite the injury concerns, Ancelotti decided to keep faith with the 34-year-old forward after receiving encouraging medical feedback.

Reports say the Italian manager even arrived at the press conference with both squad versions prepared in case Neymar’s condition worsened at the last minute.

Neymar’s inclusion marks a major comeback after years of injury struggles. The Santos star has not played for Brazil since October 2023, following a serious knee injury during a World Cup qualifier.

However, Ancelotti recently praised the forward’s physical improvement and experience ahead of the tournament.

Speaking during the squad announcement in Rio de Janeiro, Ancelotti said Neymar would only play if he proved his fitness and deserved his place in the starting lineup.

The decision came at the expense of João Pedro, who enjoyed an impressive season with Chelsea, scoring 20 goals in 49 appearances. Ancelotti admitted that leaving the forward out was difficult but explained that other players were ultimately preferred.
