Brazil’s dream of winning a sixth FIFA World Cup title came to an end after Erling Haaland scored twice to lead Norway to a famous victory and a place in the quarter-finals.
The Manchester City striker delivered another outstanding performance, scoring once in each half as Norway stunned one of the tournament favourites and continued their impressive World Cup campaign.
Brazil went into the Round of 16 match as favourites but found it difficult to stop Haaland, whose movement and finishing caused constant problems for the Selecao defence.
The Norway captain gave his side the lead with a calm finish before scoring again after the break to put Norway in a commanding position.
Brazil responded by pushing forward in search of a comeback and enjoyed long spells of possession. However, Norway remained well organised in defence and midfield, making it difficult for the five-time world champions to create clear-cut chances.
Although Brazil created several opportunities, they lacked the clinical finishing that had helped them earlier in the tournament, while Norway made the most of their chances.
Haaland’s second goal effectively sealed the victory, sparking wild celebrations among the Norwegian supporters and bringing Brazil’s World Cup journey to an end.
Neymar pulled one goal back from the penalty spot late in the game, but it was not enough to prevent Brazil from being eliminated.
The victory is one of the biggest achievements in Norway’s football history, with Haaland once again showing why he is considered one of the world’s best strikers.
Brazil, meanwhile, leave the tournament much earlier than expected, ending a campaign that began with high hopes but finished in disappointment.
Norway will now head into the quarter-finals full of confidence, with Haaland leading a team that has emerged as one of the surprise contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
