Colombian football star James Rodríguez has completed a high-profile return to his home country after joining Atlético Nacional as a free agent.
The 35-year-old midfielder has signed a contract with the Medellín-based club until June 30, 2027, bringing an end to his brief spell with Major League Soccer side Minnesota United.
James’ move marks his first return to Colombian club football since leaving the country as a teenager. He began his professional career with Envigado before moving to Argentina’s Banfield in 2008.
The attacking midfielder went on to enjoy a successful career in Europe, representing clubs including Porto, Monaco, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
He also had spells with Everton, Olympiacos, São Paulo, Rayo Vallecano and Mexican side León before moving to Minnesota United.
His biggest international breakthrough came at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where he won the Golden Boot after scoring six goals. His spectacular volley against Uruguay remains one of the most memorable goals of the tournament.
That performance earned him a €75 million move to Real Madrid, where he won several major trophies during his time at the Spanish giants.
James now returns to Colombia with significant experience and is expected to become one of Atlético Nacional’s biggest attractions.
The move also allows the midfielder to revive his club career after a difficult period that has seen him move between several teams in recent years.
James remains an important figure for the Colombian national team. He has earned more than 130 international caps and was one of the standout players at the 2024 Copa América, where he was named the tournament’s best player.
