Harry Kane’s historic season ends in heartbreak again

For most footballers, a season with 55 goals would be remembered forever. For Harry Kane, it may instead become another painful chapter in a career filled with near misses.

The Bayern Munich striker produced the greatest season of his career in 2025/26. He matched the club’s single-season scoring record previously set during Robert Lewandowski’s legendary spell in Germany, finishing with 55 goals in all competitions.

In Europe, Kane was simply unstoppable. He scored 14 goals in just 13 Champions League appearances, an incredible return that placed him among the competition’s most dominant forwards.

He scored in both quarterfinal matches against Real Madrid and then found the net in both semifinal clashes with Paris Saint-Germain.

Yet even that brilliance was not enough.

Bayern’s Champions League dream ended painfully after a dramatic semifinal defeat to PSG. Kane scored a late equaliser in the second leg, but the French side advanced 6-5 on aggregate.

At the final whistle, the disappointment on Kane’s face captured the emotions of the night. Once again, he had come agonisingly close to European glory only to fall short.

The heartbreak is becoming a familiar story. Kane has long been regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation, but major trophies have often escaped him at the final hurdle.

From losing finals with Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team to now suffering another Champions League setback with Bayern, the striker continues to carry the burden of “almost”.

Still, this campaign confirmed his place among football’s elite. Kane reached 50 Champions League goals faster than many legends of the game and continues to rewrite records in Germany.

For now, though, the numbers and records offer little comfort. Kane gave Bayern everything this season. He scored against the biggest opponents, delivered in the biggest moments and produced football of the highest quality.

But football can be cruel. And despite one of the finest individual seasons ever seen from a striker, Harry Kane is still waiting for the Champions League trophy his talent deserves.
