Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has admitted that he is unsure about his future with the national team following a painful defeat that ended his dream of lifting another major trophy with his country.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper expressed deep disappointment after Argentina’s setback, saying the pain was difficult to describe and that he needed time to reflect before making decisions about his next step.
“The truth is, the pain is hard to put into words. Now it’s time to reflect on many things, to see how to move forward, and whether it’s time to take a step aside,” Martínez said.
Martínez, who has been one of Argentina’s most important players in recent years, revealed that he had hoped to help the country achieve more history and bring another major title home.
“I dreamed that we won it back. I dreamed of bringing it home to Argentina and making history once again,” he added.
The goalkeeper also apologised to Argentine supporters, insisting that he gave everything possible while representing the national team.
“I’m truly sorry. I really gave everything I had to help my country and my teammates,” Martínez said.
Since becoming Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper, Martínez has played a key role in the team’s success, including their triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments.
His performances, confidence, and penalty-saving ability have made him a national hero, but the latest disappointment has forced him to consider whether he should continue his international career.
