Egypt has been selected to host the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, with the continental tournament scheduled to take place in November 2027.
The competition will bring together eight of Africa’s best under-23 national teams, with participating countries expected to earn their places through a qualification campaign that is scheduled to begin in September 2026.
Ghana’s Black Meteors are among the teams preparing for the qualifiers but are yet to know their opponents. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to announce the qualifying pairings ahead of the start of the campaign.
The 2027 U-23 AFCON will carry additional importance because it will also determine Africa’s representatives at the men’s football tournament of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The Olympic football competition is scheduled to take place from July 14 to 30, 2028, and African teams will have to perform strongly at the U-23 AFCON to secure a place.
However, Africa’s qualification allocation has been reduced from three places to two. This means only the finalists of the 2027 U-23 AFCON are expected to qualify for the Olympic football tournament.
The development increases the importance of every match at the tournament, with teams needing to reach the final to secure their Olympic tickets.
The Black Meteors have not featured at the men’s Olympic football tournament since the 2004 Athens Games. Ghana’s absence from subsequent editions has been a major disappointment for a country with a strong history in the competition.
Ghana won a bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, becoming the first African country to win an Olympic football medal.
