Atlético Madrid chief executive Gil Marín has firmly rejected the possibility of Julián Álvarez joining Barcelona, insisting that the Argentine forward will not be transferred to the Catalan club while he remains in charge.
Marín made the strong statement while addressing speculation surrounding Álvarez’s future. The Atlético chief said his long experience in football and reputation were important to him and that he was prepared to stand by his position.
“I’ve been in the football world for more than 30 years. My word is one of the few things I have,” Marín said.
He went on to make his position clear, adding that as long as he remains Atlético Madrid’s CEO, Álvarez will not be allowed to move to Barcelona.
“As long as I am CEO, Julián Alvarez will not be transferred to FC Barcelona. That is absolutely certain!” he declared.
Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City in 2024 and has established himself as one of the club’s key attacking players.
His performances have made him an attractive option for several top European clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona.
The 26-year-old forward has a contract with Atlético and remains an important part of the club’s plans.
Barcelona, meanwhile, continue to look for ways to strengthen their attacking options, but Marín’s latest comments suggest that any attempt to sign Álvarez from Atlético would face a major obstacle even though Álvarez has shown interest in Barcelona. Reports suggest that Álvarez has been absent from training recently due to ill health.
