The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will start hearing cases involving candidates whose WASSCE results have been withheld over suspected examination irregularities from Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, explained that the hearings will allow affected candidates to respond to the allegations against them before WAEC makes a final decision.
“It will start as early as Wednesday this week,” Kapi said.
WAEC has withheld the results of 957 candidates in some subjects, while the entire results of 270 candidates have also been withheld.
In addition, the council has cancelled 7,434 subject results and the entire results of 861 candidates because of confirmed examination irregularities.
Mr Kapi advised affected candidates to visit the WAEC website and go to the irregularity section. They can then enter their index numbers to find out the status of their cases and where they are expected to appear for the hearing.
WAEC will also contact the affected candidates directly through text messages.
“We’ll send SMS to them and inform them where they should go and meet with our staff so they can also tell their story.”
According to Kapi, the large number of malpractice cases detected this year is partly because WAEC has increased monitoring at examination centres. Examiners were also more careful and alert during the marking process.
“Previously, we may not have detected some of them,” he said.
He explained that WAEC also sent more monitors to areas where the council had previously faced challenges reaching examination centres.
WAEC continues to warn candidates against examination malpractice and has encouraged them to rely on their own preparation and answer questions independently instead of cheating.
