CAS to hear Senegal appeal over Morocco’s AFCON title

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set to hear Senegal’s appeal against the decision that handed Morocco the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.

The hearing is scheduled for today, Thursday and will be conducted behind closed doors. No verdict is expected immediately after the proceedings.

The dispute follows a decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board in March 2026 to declare Senegal to have forfeited the AFCON final against Morocco. CAF subsequently recorded the match as a 3-0 victory for Morocco.

CAF said the decision was based on Articles 82 and 84 of its AFCON regulations, after ruling that the conduct of the Senegal team amounted to a breach of the competition rules.

The decision overturned an earlier ruling by the CAF Disciplinary Board and effectively awarded Morocco the continental title.

Senegal have challenged the decision at CAS in a bid to overturn CAF’s ruling and reclaim the trophy. The case has attracted significant attention across African football because of the implications for the official outcome of the tournament.

The today’s hearing will give both sides an opportunity to present their arguments before the sports arbitration body.

However, the absence of an immediate ruling means the uncertainty surrounding the AFCON title is expected to continue beyond the hearing.

The CAS decision, when eventually delivered, will determine whether CAF’s decision to award the title to Morocco stands or whether Senegal’s appeal succeeds.
