Italian club Como have reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea to sign England defender Trevoh Chalobah in a deal worth an initial €30 million, with an additional €6 million in performance-related add-ons and a sell-on clause included.
The move is expected to bring an end to Chalobah’s long association with his boyhood club.
The 27-year-old centre-back is understood to have agreed to the move after expressing his desire to continue his career in Italy. The opportunity to play UEFA Champions League football under Como manager and former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas is believed to have played a major role in his decision.
Chalobah joined Chelsea’s academy as an eight-year-old and progressed through the club’s youth ranks before making his senior debut. Over the years, he established himself as a dependable defender, making more than 150 appearances for the Blues and helping the club win several major honours, including the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League.
The transfer is also expected to benefit Chelsea financially. As a homegrown academy graduate, Chalobah’s sale will count as pure profit under football’s financial sustainability rules, providing the club with greater flexibility as it continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.
