Todd Boehly has ended his four-year association with Chelsea as chairman after selling his ownership interest in the Premier League club to Clearlake Capital.
Chelsea confirmed today that affiliates of Clearlake will acquire Boehly’s stake as part of a wider ownership transition. Clearlake will also acquire the ownership interest of Mark Walter, giving the investment group full control of the club.
Boehly became chairman after the consortium led by him and Clearlake completed the purchase of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Under the new arrangement, Boehly will leave his position as chairman, while Clearlake becomes the club’s sole controlling owner.
In a statement, Boehly described his time as chairman as an honour and thanked the Premier League, Chelsea’s coaches and players, staff, leadership and supporters for their contributions during his tenure.
He also expressed confidence in the club’s future under Clearlake’s leadership.
Clearlake’s co-founders, Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, thanked Boehly for his contribution and said the investment group would continue its work at Chelsea.
The club confirmed that the ownership change will not lead to changes in its day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction. Clearlake also said it intends to continue investing in the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development.
The reported deal is valued at about £950 million ($1.27 billion), according to Reuters. The transaction brings an end to the multi-party ownership structure that had been in place since the 2022 takeover.
Chelsea will now enter a new phase under Clearlake’s full control, with the club continuing its sporting programme under the existing leadership.
