England midfielder Jude Bellingham has praised Ghana’s performance in their goalless FIFA World Cup Group L encounter, insisting that a Black Stars player should have received the Man of the Match award instead of him.
Bellingham was named Man of the Match after England were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana at Gillette Stadium. However, the Real Madrid star was quick to acknowledge the efforts of Ghana’s players, who produced a disciplined and determined display to earn a valuable point.
“I didn’t deserve the Man of the Match award,” Bellingham said after the game. “In my view, it should have gone to a Ghana player.”

The Black Stars frustrated one of the tournament favourites with a well-organised defensive performance. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare delivered a series of important saves, including efforts from England captain Harry Kane and winger Bukayo Saka, while defenders Jerome Opoku, Jonas Adjetey, Marvin Senaya and Gideon Mensah stood firm throughout the contest.
England dominated possession and created several chances but struggled to break down Ghana’s resilient defence. The Black Stars remained compact, disciplined and dangerous on the counterattack, ensuring they left the match with a crucial point.
Bellingham himself was one of England’s brightest performers, driving his team forward from midfield and creating opportunities. Yet the 22-year-old chose to focus attention on Ghana’s display rather than his own performance.
His remarks reflect the respect Ghana earned from their opponents after one of their most impressive performances of the tournament so far.
The result leaves both Ghana and England on four points in Group L heading into the final round of matches. Ghana now faces Croatia in a decisive encounter on June 28, knowing that a victory would secure qualification to the Round of 32.
