The Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mrs. Doris Kwekwor Adjei, has reiterated the company’s commitment to improving sanitation and reducing flood risks across the country through a large-scale cleanup and drainage maintenance exercise in the Ashanti Region.
The operation, which took place on Saturday, July 4, formed part of activities under the National Sanitation Day initiative and brought together several institutions, including the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Dredge Masters Limited, and various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
As part of the exercise, Zoomlion deployed heavy-duty equipment, logistics and personnel to assist in desilting drains, clearing refuse dumps and improving sanitation conditions in communities across the region.
Addressing participants during the exercise, Mrs. Adjei said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to supporting national efforts aimed at protecting lives, property and the environment.
She described Zoomlion’s involvement as part of its corporate social responsibility and stressed the importance of collaborative action in addressing sanitation challenges.
She praised the efforts of Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for their leadership and advocacy on environmental cleanliness and public sanitation issues.
According to her, the recent floods experienced in parts of Ghana, which resulted in deaths, destruction of property and displacement of residents, serve as a reminder of the consequences of poor sanitation and blocked drainage systems.
She noted that keeping drains free from waste remains one of the most effective ways to reduce flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
Mrs. Adjei also extended sympathies to families affected by the floods and expressed hope that ongoing interventions would help reduce future disasters.
In addition to drain clearing and waste collection, she announced that Zoomlion would carry out fumigation exercises in communities impacted by flooding.
The exercise is expected to help prevent the spread of diseases often associated with stagnant water, accumulated refuse and unsanitary conditions after floods.
She assured stakeholders that the company has mobilised the necessary machinery and workforce to support the operation and remains ready to assist government agencies and local authorities in future sanitation interventions.
Mrs. Adjei further called on residents to play their part by properly disposing of waste and maintaining clean surroundings, stressing that environmental sanitation is a collective responsibility that requires year-round commitment from all citizens.
