A 26-year-old private legal practitioner has reportedly died after suffering a cardiac arrest while celebrating Ghana’s victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The deceased, Sara Araba Tettey, was a newly qualified lawyer and alumna of the Faculty of Law at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
According to reports, she collapsed during celebrations that erupted after the Black Stars secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama through a stoppage-time goal by Caleb Yirenkyi.
Ms Tettey, who was called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year, was working with O & A Legal Consult and had already begun building a reputation as a promising young legal professional.
Eyewitnesses said she had been watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel at Bomso, near the KNUST campus in Kumasi, when she suddenly became unresponsive amid the post-match celebrations.
Friends and other patrons reportedly rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel fought to save her life.
Doctors and emergency responders are said to have administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for about 45 minutes in an attempt to revive her. Despite the efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The body has reportedly been deposited at the mortuary pending autopsy and funeral arrangements.
