Woman jailed three years for abducting baby at Kpando market

A 31-year-old woman has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after admitting to the abduction of an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.

On August 3, 2026, the Kpando Circuit Court imposed the sentence on Stella Amedzorme, following investigations that resulted in the safe recovery of the child, as stated by Inspector Felix Kwao, the Volta North Regional Police Public Relations Officer.

The abduction took place on July 17, 2026, when the baby’s mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe, temporarily entrusted her son to Amedzorme, a fellow trader at the market, while she went to buy packaging bags.

According to the Police, upon her return, both Amedzorme and the child were missing, prompting her to report the incident to the authorities.

Acting on intelligence, officers apprehended Amedzorme on July 18 in Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, where the baby was found unharmed.

During the investigation, the suspect confessed to taking the child at the behest of her fiancé, who is currently evading capture.

Amedzorme made her initial appearance before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20 and was subsequently remanded in police custody. She returned to court on August 3, entered a guilty plea, and was sentenced to three years in prison.

“The swift arrest of the suspect and the safe rescue of the child demonstrate our unwavering commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice,” the Police said.
