TRAFFITECH-GH to impose higher fines on speeding motorists

Motorists who exceed the legally prescribed speed limits will face progressively higher fines under the new TRAFFITECH-GH enforcement system, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has announced.

Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, said the system would impose financial penalties based on the extent to which a driver exceeds the applicable speed limit.

Speaking in an interview today, Thursday, October 8, ACP Obeng explained that motorists would be fined 20 penalty units for every five kilometres per hour above the permitted speed.

With one penalty unit valued at GH¢12, the offence attracts a minimum fine of GH¢240 for every five-kilometre-per-hour increment above the limit. The penalty, he explained, will increase as the level of speeding rises.

ACP Obeng described speeding as a major contributor to road crashes and fatalities in Ghana, stressing that the new enforcement regime is intended to discourage motorists from violating speed restrictions.

He said the penalties are backed by existing road traffic regulations, particularly Regulation 242, which provides for sanctions against motorists who exceed speed limits.

The comments come ahead of the rollout of TRAFFITECH-GH, a technology-driven initiative designed to strengthen enforcement of road traffic regulations.

The system was initially expected to begin operations on September 29 but has since been rescheduled for November 1. Authorities said the postponement would allow more time for public education, sensitisation and engagement with relevant stakeholders.
