Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) participating in the “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday expressed strong confidence in the party’s future, insisting that it remains firmly connected to ordinary Ghanaians despite its defeat in the 2024 general election.
Several demonstrators who spoke to journalists during the march said the protest reflected growing public dissatisfaction with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
They argued that many Ghanaians were becoming increasingly frustrated with the current administration and believed the NPP is steadily regaining public support.
One supporter, who described himself as someone familiar with the political mood on the streets of Accra, rejected claims that those attending the demonstration were merely unhappy party loyalists protesting out of frustration.
Instead, he maintained that the large turnout showed renewed confidence in the NPP and its 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to him, public sentiment is gradually shifting in favour of the former Vice President, whom he described as the party’s leading figure for the future.
He confidently declared that the political atmosphere on the streets now favours Dr. Bawumia and the NPP.
Another demonstrator claimed that many citizens had become disappointed with the governing NDC and President John Dramani Mahama.
He argued that the government’s performance had failed to meet the expectations of many Ghanaians, leading to growing public frustration.
The demonstration formed part of the NPP’s nationwide protest under the theme “Democracy Under Attack”.
Organisers said the march was intended to draw attention to what they described as increasing intimidation of government critics, arbitrary arrests and threats to freedom of expression under the current administration.
