Residents of Amasaman, Obeyeyie hit the streets over worsening road conditions

Residents of Amasaman Obeyeyie in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region have staged a protest over the poor condition of their road network, demanding urgent government intervention to address what they describe as years of neglect and hardship.

The demonstrators, made up of traders, drivers, students, and youth groups, blocked key portions of the main road, carrying placards and chanting slogans to draw attention to the deteriorating infrastructure.

According to the residents, the road has become nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season, leading to frequent accidents, damage to vehicles, and delays in transportation of goods and services.

They say the situation has significantly increased the cost of living and affected economic activities in the area.

Some of the protesters expressed frustration that repeated appeals to local authorities and political leaders have not resulted in any meaningful action.

“We have suffered for years. Ambulances struggle to pass here, taxis refuse to come here, and during rainfall the road becomes a death trap. We are tired of promises,” one resident lamented during the protest.

Another protester emphasized that the poor road conditions have also affected schoolchildren, who often struggle to get to school during heavy rains due to flooding and muddy terrain.

The residents are calling on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ga West Municipal Assembly to prioritize the construction and rehabilitation of the Obeyeyie–Amasaman stretch, which they describe as a critical economic route linking several surrounding communities.

Security personnel were deployed to the area to maintain order and ensure the protest remained peaceful.

No incidents of violence or arrests were reported at the time of filing this report.

Local authorities are yet to issue an official response, but residents say they expect urgent engagement and a clear timeline for rehabilitation works.
