NPP holds emergency meeting after Wontumi’s 20-year sentence

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has started reviewing the court’s judgement involving the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The party is also discussing its next steps following the ruling.

The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, shared the update in a post on his official Facebook page.

He said the party’s leadership, together with its flagbearer and legal team, had met to carefully study the court’s decision.

According to Mr Kodua, the meeting is focused on reviewing the judgement in the Samreboi mining case and deciding what the party should do next.

“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), together with our flagbearer and the party’s legal team, is currently in a meeting to thoroughly review the judgement delivered by the Court in the case involving our Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, concerning the Samreboi mining matter, and to determine the appropriate next course of action,” he wrote.

The General Secretary said the party would release an official statement after the meeting ends and a decision has been made.

“The party will communicate its official position and the decisions arising from these deliberations in due course,” Mr Kodua added.

Following the court’s decision, Mr Kodua appealed to NPP members and supporters to remain calm and trust the party’s leadership.

He also encouraged party members to stay united and support the leadership during what he described as a difficult period. He stressed the need for unity, discipline and commitment to the party’s values.

“In the meantime, I respectfully urge all members of our great Party to rally behind the leadership during this challenging moment. Let us remain calm, united, disciplined, and steadfast in our commitment to the values and interests of the New Patriotic Party,” he stated.
