Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch), has revealed that some candidates resort to placing money in their examination scripts to sway examiners during grading.
He stated that this practice is one of several tactics employed by candidates in hopes of gaining favour from markers and enhancing their examination results.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Asare elaborated that such efforts can only be successful if an examiner compromises their professional integrity, emphasising that examiners who maintain their ethical standards would report such incidents instead of accepting the bribe.
“In some instances, candidates put money in the examination scripts. They put money in the script for whoever is going to mark it,” he noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi.
The EduWatch Executive Director also expressed concerns regarding the insufficient investment in examination monitoring and surveillance systems, contending that more robust mechanisms are necessary to identify and prevent examination malpractice.
He advocated for a comprehensive reform of monitoring structures and increased support for the institutions responsible for conducting examinations to ensure that irregularities are effectively managed.
His remarks follow the announcement by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) regarding the cancellation of 601 candidates’ results in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with an additional 167 results being withheld and 2,722 others currently under investigation.
