Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, has officially been released from custody after fulfilling the strict bail conditions imposed by the Accra High Court in his ongoing extradition case.
The socialite and businessman regained his freedom on Friday, May 15, 2026, after weeks of legal and financial hurdles following the court’s decision to grant him bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties.
Abu Trica had remained in detention since December 11, 2025, after his arrest in a joint operation involving Ghanaian security agencies and United States law enforcement officials.
He is wanted by US authorities over alleged involvement in a large-scale romance fraud and money laundering scheme said to have targeted elderly Americans.
According to prosecutors, the alleged cybercrime syndicate used sophisticated artificial intelligence tools and fake online identities to emotionally manipulate victims before convincing them to send huge sums of money.
Authorities in the US claim the network defrauded victims of more than $8 million.
His lawyer, Papa Kofi Essel, confirmed the release in an interview with Citi News, describing it as evidence that “the rule of law is working” in Ghana.
The road to his release was not smooth. Although the High Court granted him bail in April, Abu Trica initially failed to satisfy the conditions, forcing his legal team to seek possible variations from the court.
Meanwhile, two individuals earlier linked to the case Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, were reportedly cleared by prosecutors after investigations found insufficient evidence against them.
Despite his release, Abu Trica’s legal troubles are far from over. He still faces extradition proceedings and remains under court-imposed restrictions as Ghanaian authorities continue to process the request from the United States.
If extradited and convicted, he could face up to 20 years in a US federal prison on charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy.
