MP Sammi Awuku has warned that Ghana’s drug trafficking problem is becoming more complex, with traffickers adopting new methods to evade law enforcement.
He said the traditional methods of transporting narcotics have changed significantly as criminal networks develop more sophisticated ways of operating.
“These illicit and illegal drug activities and trade have taken a much more diverse approach. The old way of trafficking does not exist now; they’ve modified the approaches,” he said.
Mr Awuku also called for greater transparency in the handling of major narcotics investigations, including regular updates on prosecutions and the recovery of assets linked to criminal activities.
“We’re always kept in the dark,” he said, arguing that major drug cases involving significant sums of money have implications for Ghana’s credibility and public interest.
He said Parliament must strengthen its oversight of agencies responsible for Ghana’s borders, ports, airports and narcotics control.
Mr Awuku disclosed that the relevant parliamentary committee is scheduled to engage key state agencies between September 21 and October 2 to assess existing challenges and measures being taken to prevent Ghana from becoming a major transit point for narcotics.
He welcomed the President’s decision to convene a high-level meeting on border security and narcotics trafficking but stressed that the effectiveness of the response would depend on the implementation by the relevant ministries and agencies.
He urged the institutions to prioritise national security and intensify efforts to protect Ghana’s reputation and borders.
