Police arrest suspect over murder of UCC student Innocentia Avinu

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the death of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose body was found on a beach in Cape Coast after she was reported missing.

The arrest marks a significant development in investigations into the murder of the 20-year-old Level 200 student, which has sparked widespread public concern and calls for justice.

Innocentia was reported missing after she left her hostel on the UCC campus on June 11. According to reports, she informed friends she was going out to meet someone, but failed to return. Efforts by family members, friends, and the university community to locate her proved unsuccessful.

The search ended in tragedy when her body was discovered washed ashore near Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast. Police transported the body to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary, where family members and university officials later identified her. Preliminary examinations reportedly revealed no visible signs of physical assault, prompting authorities to await autopsy results while investigations continued.

Following public outrage over the incident, Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, deployed a special team of investigators and intelligence officers to support the probe in the Central Region. The team was tasked with uncovering the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and identifying those responsible.

The arrest of the suspect is expected to provide investigators with crucial leads as they work to establish the events leading to Innocentia’s death. Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect or the specific charges being considered.

Meanwhile, the management of the University of Cape Coast has pledged its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies and has also initiated an internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Authorities have assured the public that investigations remain ongoing and that all necessary steps will be taken to establish the truth behind the tragic incident.
