We’ll seek adjournment for Wontumi’s July 3 judgment — Atta Akyea

Lawyer for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says he plans to ask the court to postpone the July 3 judgment date in the ongoing Samreboi illegal mining case.

His lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, believes it would not be fair for the court to deliver judgment so soon after a change in the defence team.

Speaking in an interview today, Atta Akyea explained that the new legal team needs enough time to study the case and properly represent Chairman Wontumi before the court reaches a final decision.

He said granting additional time would help ensure a fair hearing and allow the defence to fully present its case before judgment is delivered.

“I will plead with the court for that because if you want to have a fair trial and if you want our input as part of the thinking of the judge, I believe they should allow time,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi is facing charges over allegations that he allowed illegal mining activities to take place on his concession in Samreboi without the required approval from the relevant mining authorities.

He has denied all the charges and pleaded not guilty.

On Monday, June 15, 2026, Chairman Wontumi appointed Samuel Atta Akyea as his new lead lawyer after his former counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, stepped down from the case.
