One arrested as Tema Police intercept suspected Indian hemp

Police in Tema have intercepted a large quantity of suspected Indian hemp along the Tema–Ada road in the Greater Accra Region, leading to the arrest of one suspect following a pursuit that ended at Bondase.

The operation was carried out by officers from the Tema Regional Police Command as part of intensified intelligence-led efforts to clamp down on narcotic trafficking along major transport corridors.

According to police information, officers initially intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal substances. However, the driver reportedly attempted to flee, triggering a pursuit by the police team.

He was subsequently pursued and apprehended at Bondase. A search conducted on the vehicle led to the discovery of twelve (12) sacks and eighty (80) parcels of compressed plant materials concealed in a container and wrapped in sellotape.

The substances are suspected to be Indian hemp, pending forensic examination by the Police Forensic Science Laboratory to confirm their exact composition.

The suspect was immediately arrested and taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Police say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the consignment and the wider drug trafficking network.

The seized items have been retained as evidence as investigations continue.

Authorities have also reiterated their commitment to tackling narcotics-related crime, warning that individuals involved in trafficking or transporting illegal drugs will face the full rigour of the law.
